Just curious but has anyone checked on the House bill HR 3200 language? I was bored, and had heard about some "language" and page numbers to find it from a friend; so I thought I'd stroll through it... I didn't make it too far before I got the WTF look on my face.
Check out sections 440 and 1904 of the bill (Page 838). Pay attention to the following (under the heading) "Home visitation programs for families with young children and families expecting children."
Families with, and expecting? Will the fine folks at these "Programs" be there to consult and coach those who are expecting and/or have babies? Would they ever decide circumstances to be not beneficial for the children and encourage abortions???
Reading on... The programs (provided via grants to states) would educate parents on child behavior and parenting skills.
Uhhh what? Do we really need to have Government officals dropping by and "Educating" people? Is this the health care that is so badly needed? When did Government health care turn into Government child care?
The bill also says that the Government agents will be, "well-trained and competent". They will "provide parents with knowledge of age-appropriate child development in cognitive, language, social, emotional, and motor domains ... modeling, consulting, and coaching on parenting practices," and "skills to interact with their child to enhance age-appropriate development."
So let me get this strainght. Am I to assume the "State's" mediators would understand every parent's social or religious values on parenting? Would they teach some secular and progressive approved version of parental values and wisdom? Is it going to be a one size fits all parenting session???
Ummm, let me think... No thanks! Keep your Government officals out of my, and my kids life!
I have to add that creating a larger nanny state is NOT the solution to better health care. Just a thought but, we already have Government entitlement program(s) that provides two medical coverage programs.
Correct me if I am wrong but they are: Medicare (for senior citizens) and Medicaid (for low-income citizens). For crying out loud President Obama mentioned in his speech last week that these two programs are the greatest contributors to our "skyrocketing" deficit. I have to wonder instead of huge expansion of Government and Government control/spending; why not "reform" and improve/enhance those programs. They already exist. Get rid of waste and control costs there; rather than creating a new third (or fourth or fifth) Government medical bureaucracy/entitlement program called "universal health care"?
I checked out the verbiage in that section of HR 3200. First of all, this is to provide funding for voluntary home visits on parenting. Next, I think it's a bit paranoid to think that this would result in a push for abortion. And if you think that the government is sneaking something in on potential parents, check out some of the "pregnancy options" centers who totally lie about abortion and mislead women by telling them that they will support all pregnancy options and then don't. But I digress...
It states that these voluntary home visits are meant to "reduce abuse and neglect and improve child health and development." I don't see anything in there on religion and I think you know that the ACLU would ream any government program that promoted religion OR which violated someone's right to practice whatever religion they want.
Get real. There is some basic stuff that I'd venture to guess at least half of the people who call themselves parents don't know. Diet is a HUGE one. So is neglect and abuse. You don't have to get into any religious values to teach these basic concepts.
It has always amazed me that we are required to have a license to drive a car, but any moron can become a parent whether or not they know how to do it. I think having some skills before and during parenting is extremely valuable. I, myself, have done much research into parenting and have learned a great deal. I've read books and taken courses and guess what? Some of the people teaching me had different religious views than mine. It was never a problem.
You may think it is common sense, COE, but look around and perhaps it will become apparent that many people lack the skills to raise a child.
I'm all for it. Not only will it keep health care costs down, but it will help many children, and their parents!
And if you don't like the program, you don't have to have home visits.
I respond with all due respect, and mean no offense if any is taken...
"So you would rather due without Medicare or Medicaid I take it?"
Read my post on 08-25-09 @ 0350. Do I say that I am advocating for the removal of Medicare, or Medicaid? No... I am asking a question(s) about this several trillion dollar a year program! Is this not okay, or Anti-American?
Paranoid or not, and that may be your perception of me, and that's fine. I just do not trust this Government. My trust is lost each day!
Where do we draw the line? I thought we were trying to insure those who don't have it currently? Now we are paying for Government agents to come into homes and teach parenting and nutrition classes? Of course voluntary... Is it like option basketball practice in High School? The coach says it's opitional but you better get your ass to practice!
"It has always amazed me that we are required to have a license to drive a car, but any moron can become a parent whether or not they know how to do it."
Yes, it's called personal freedom. Good, bad, or otherwise! Since when would requiring a licence to have a child be contitutional under Roe v Wade?
I heard a woman yelling at a "Pro-Choice" rally one time, "Keep your laws off my body!" Surely you are not advocating issuing licences to perpective parents? Or anything to do with the female reproductive system for that matter?
"I think having some skills before and during parenting is extremely valuable. I, myself, have done much research into parenting and have learned a great deal. I've read books and taken courses"
This is where we agree. I too have taken classes, and read my fair share of books. Funny thing is, I've paid for the books and I've paid for the classes. I had nine months to save the money for both each time! We already have programs available to low income expecting parents! Why do we need another Federal one?
I think it is a generational thing too. I say it over and over, (and sound like a broken record) our Government in it's empathetic idealism has created the welfare system and most of the problems within it. Same goes with parenting. I learned how to be a father by watching my Grandfather and my Father. Who were and are great men. I also had the misfortune of having an abusive horrible Mother and saw the way I didn't want to raise my kids! We don't need Government getting into the lives and homes of the people!
"Guess what? Some of the people teaching me had different religious views than mine. It was never a problem."
Out of all the classes I've taken save for one; religion was not a factor at all. There was no mention of religion at all! The one I mention was based in religion as it was through my Church! Religion if that's you thing should be your "Choice" as whether you will attend the class of not. Here's this personal freedom thing again!
I made the "choice" to take these classes. It wasn't Government mandated, or even Government suggested! I went to learn how to be a better parent.
"If you don't like the program, you don't have to have home visits."
I do not want them, nor will I accept them in any way shape or form. If a Governmental official wants to enter my home it better because I invited them, or they better have a warrant!
If this all makes me paranoid, silly, or Anti-American to you guys then so be it...
COE, I guess I just don't picture this part of the program like you do. 'Government official'? Is that what you call a psychologist who specializes in child/family relationships, simply because they get some grant money from feds?
I guess I see it in the same way that I see the option to have sterilization surgery under private insurance. Just because it is an option, doesn't mean anyone is forcing it on you are pushing any agenda.
By the way, I never said that people should have a license to be a parent. I'm just making the point that there isn't even such a thing as parental preparation in schools, yet we have to pass a test to drive a car. I'm making the point of the importance of knowing something about parenting.
You were fortunate enough to have some good role models in spite of having a not-so-good one. Some people simply aren't that lucky and don't EVER learn how to be good parents. I see the option in HR 3200 as just another OPTION for people to learn those things.
And I, for one, never said you or anyone else who doesn't agree with universal health care is anti-American. I don't call people anti-American for their political views.
Just curious but has anyone checked on the House bill HR 3200 language? I was bored, and had heard about some "language" and page numbers to find it from a friend; so I thought I'd stroll through it... I didn't make it too far before I got the WTF look on my face.

No, they won't mandate abortions. That's just silly.
ReplyDeleteSo you would rather due without Medicare or Medicaid I take it?
I think a lot of the right wing opposition comes from the erroneous belief that they will be forced, and there will not be a choice.
ReplyDeleteBut of course private industries, and insurance companies will get a choice, however there must be a public option in order to guarantee choice.
ReplyDeleteHi COE,

ReplyDeletePolice have entered my home and dragged me out without a warrant, but I do not fear the government. Government is the people.
