I agree that some fees are too high. We did some remodeling on our house recently...added a bathroom and expanded a bedroom. The permits were over $2100 (because of the bathroom). Outside the city limits they'd be about $400. Pretty crazy.
Don't even get me started on the whole permit process, or the fee's! Tom may have to bann me for foul/fowl language! You wanna talk about stupidity in Governemnt, go apply for a permit!
There is a road access permit required on all new construction entry way/driveways. You have to pave 18 feet of your driveway coming onto your property from a maintained road.
Well, from my property pin to where the pavement (Of the County road) ends and my driveway begins is approx 33 feet.
I was told that there is a permit on file (paid for) from the previous owner but no final inspection record of the access. I was told that I would have to get a quote for what it would cost to pave the required 18 feet, apply for the permit, ($135) and recieve a final inspection when the paving was completed. After throwing a fit I was allowed to just apply for the permit and if the pavement was found to meet the requirements the cost of the permit would roll into the total cost of all of my permits.
I didn't want to complain too much as they hold the permit process over me for future permit(s) approvals. So long story short they have me by the short hairs.
Rest assured that when this is all over and I get my final inspections completed I will write a harshly worded letter!
Given this experience I can't wait for Governemnt controlled health care :)
Oh, and for anyone interested in copy-and-paste, I found out that you have to be logged in FIRST before you can copy and paste to the comment window…or did ya’ll know that already? Wish I had known before I re-typed that long post in response to COE on health care! :(

And private companies don't add on extra fees?

If you didn't catch this on NPR yesterday, it is pretty funny. Better if you listen instead of reading and it only takes a couple minutes:
