Free speech restrained (Aug. 11)

A timely topic given what's been happening on the comments threads lately!

  1. Hmmm, seems to me that if someone can call another the N-word, just so long as they aren't threatening violence, then it is ok for someone to approach you with a petition in a public place.

  2. I guess I don't get it. How hard is it to say, "no thank you" and continue what you're doing? I have been approached by left leaning signiture gather-ers. I can respect them and I have found that a nicely put no thank you usually does the trick...

Have we really gotten so partisan at the main street level? I understand this community is overwhelmingly liberal but c'mon! What is going on these days? Pelosi even got into the argument so to speak. If I disagree or even dare to ask a question with health care, or taxes I am un-American? Since when is dissent un-American?

  4. I would invite all of you to take part in the next citizen academy put on by the Sheriff's Office. It might help you get a little more insight to the difficult field of Law enforcement...

  5. I hate the "N" word as much as the next guy. I do hate this speech because that's exactly what it is "hate". I however cannot and do not want "speech" (no matter how ugly it is) criminalized. I may hate what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Now it goes without saying when speech incites, and/or leads directly to crossing the line to assault and injury then that's entirely another thing; and I would be the first to stand up and lend any support I can behind criminal action.

  6. "Vicky are you referring to the South Corvallis incident?"

Yes, but not to debate that point further. I'm just saying in comparison to shouting a slur at someone, approaching them with a petition is pretty innocuous.
