Event really gave a sense of what relying on a wheelchair is like (Aug. 6)

Great letter from Leah Bolger (I thought).

  1. Wow, a Leah Bolger letter without mention of ending a war somewhere?

Seriously though, I can imagine how difficult life would be if I were confined to a wheelchair. Now in addition to the ADA; what are Mrs. Bolgers' ideas on more ways to help?

  2. It would be great to throw a bunch of money at some health care technology. I suppose one thing war is good for is it has always been a means to throw tons of money at science. And hey, if we didn't have wars to blow off peoples limbs, we'd have less reason to create prosthetics. I saw some robot legs on TV that looked cool. And they make those new wheelchairs with wheels that double up on each other, so it places the person at eye level. Of course with income disparities, some would still need crutches, and lacking that, arms to drag themselves around everywhere, if they needed to be mobile.

In the meantime, a simple acknowlegement of others humanity is always nice. My buddy, who used to write for the Barometer about wheelchair access seemed to live a more active life than me, and I don't use a wheelchair. Placing myself in this position, and we are all merely one accident or illness away from this fate, I would think I would want to live my life with the few complications the better. This is not difficult to accommodate.

Pass over some more of that empathy.
