Keeping those jobs here is artificially keeping the prices of those products high. But it's okay, with the current economy we're seeing plenty of foreign companies outsource their manufacturing to us, and the jobs pay quite well. Where I'm staying right now the neighbors work for Toyota and make a good living doing it.

I am a long-time viewer of the GT and DH papers online. I have also participated in the Online Comments section to Opinions in the past. I stopped commenting some months ago because of inequities in editing the comments, e.g., some commentators were banned from posting for contentious posts, etc.
I have peered in from time to time since then and have noticed that the comments section has not improved. In fact, it has potentially gotten worse. When one 'gets to know' the regular commentators, it is obvious that some who have been banned for abuse return under a different user name. For example, there is one person that I and others know has returned twice, possibly three times, after being banned.
I enjoy reading thoughtful comments, especially when there is intelligent points from every side of an issue. However, so many of the comments are rude, derogatory, and downright disgusting that I am loathe to even look at the comments section anymore. Here are a couple of gems from the past two weeks:

I don't know how to keep banned individuals from returning under a new name and IP address, but I think for those to whom a threat of being banned is simply a joke, they will keep abusing the comments section as in the examples above. I just thought I'd let you know that productive discussion seems to have gone out the window despite the fact that some posters have been banned.
I think gays and perverts should crawl right back into the closet they came out of for the inbarassment of there ways instead of them saying its a right they have. Perversion is not a right its a disease.

I emailed them in the past. When Barefoot was banned yet others (dangerous dave, Austin, JimF..ect) who resorted to name calling and inappropriate attacks were allowed to continue.
It was more about the inequities of banning a person who can debate (barefoot) without resorting to that type of mentality -vs- not banning those that utilize that mentality when cornered.
I got nothing back...nada...not a thing.
I received more of a response from Matt when I wrote and complained about Austin and Enigma.
He responded that they had both been warned that they would be banned, then a few hours later they both started screaming in a thread about being threatened with banning.
Austin said he could not be banned and if he was he would be back.
Enigma claimed he was a personal friend of Hasso and would have Matt's job.
Uh....right after that they were both banned.
Hell of a lot of good banning does for those that are abusive.

I don't know how to keep banned individuals from returning under a new name and IP address, but I think for those to whom a threat of being banned is simply a joke, they will keep abusing the comments section as in the examples above. I just thought I'd let you know that productive discussion seems to have gone out the window despite the fact that some posters have been banned.

I find it difficult to believe that the paper cannot keep true abusers out, yet they ban barefoot who never abused anyone.

Whoa, that person is truly in need of mental help.
ReplyDeleteI got no response from Graham K. I'm thinking of writing a letter to Lee Enterprises. Did you write directly to them in the past, momofthree?
ReplyDeleteI emailed them in the past. When Barefoot was banned yet others (dangerous dave, Austin, JimF..ect) who resorted to name calling and inappropriate attacks were allowed to continue.
ReplyDeleteIt was more about the inequities of banning a person who can debate (barefoot) without resorting to that type of mentality -vs- not banning those that utilize that mentality when cornered.
I got nothing back...nada...not a thing.
I received more of a response from Matt when I wrote and complained about Austin and Enigma.
He responded that they had both been warned that they would be banned, then a few hours later they both started screaming in a thread about being threatened with banning.
Austin said he could not be banned and if he was he would be back.
Enigma claimed he was a personal friend of Hasso and would have Matt's job.
Uh....right after that they were both banned.
Hell of a lot of good banning does for those that are abusive.
I wish barefoot would come back...
Can someone start a new thread on inappropriate posts? This one is getting rather long to travel down on....
