  1. That is a weird situation...to be tried for a crime that took place so long ago and for the guy to be so old. I feel sorry for him, even if he is guilty.

  2. Interesting side note; after the war, a number of "homosexuals" were left in the camps by the allied forces to serve out their prison terms.

  3. Yeah, I feel bad for him too...

He has made it so many years after the war that it really seems un-important to put him on trial now. I mean, really, having "allegedly" killed 27,900 people (or "allegedly" having a hand in killing) is so 1945.

Besides he's just a sad old man now. I am sure he won't kill nor have any more people killed. No sense in finding if he is innocent or guilty… 

Tom, I didn't realize that happened. Where did you see/hear/read about that? This is horrible yet not all that shocking.

I am a WWII history buff, but sadly I (like a lot of people) only seem to focus on the battle(s) aspect of it. Did you watch WWII in HD a couple of weeks ago on the History Channel? It was very good.

  4. Info on Gays being kept in prison after the war can be found on various websites, but I learned of it, a number of years ago, at the US Holocaust website, as well as the Lambda website.

Not everyone was released after the war. Those who had been imprisoned for being murderers or rapists, for instance, served out their term.

Many oppressive laws were immediately repealed after the war, but Paragraph 175 was not. This was a law against two men having sexual relations. Because this law was allowed to stand, anyone in the camps wearing a pink triangle had to stay in prison until the law was repealed in 1969, another 24 years.

I imagine, someone like Gordon Shadle would be ok with that.

  5. Tom,

What websites? I am curious now. History is my thang' so I'd like to check it/them out.

As far as the "murders" and "rapists" staying... So far as they were moved to prisons, and treated, well you know, like humans; I guess I have no problem. The rest is shocking and appalling. Thankfully people like me aren't ok with so... Yeah me...
