With high unemployment and competition for jobs, I can't help but want to suggest to job-seekers that they check their appearance before looking for work (even just picking up an application).
I've seen the people waiting in line at the Trader Joe's trailer; all were in jeans and tennis shoes. You might get to wear a Hawaiian shirt if and when you get hired, but not before. First appearances do count.

Generally good advice, but I had to laugh when I saw the article about Trader Joe's, and Monica insulted one of the pictured applicants because he had a piercing on his face.
ReplyDeleteI know one of the managers at Trader Joe's, and I was there when she got her tongue pierced in Amsterdam.
Don't see Monica's post...must have been removed.
ReplyDeleteI've always had the thought that if you go to an interview, you should dress like you would for work. Perhaps a little better, but where I work, we don't dress up. You'd be stupid to wear a suit or dress in a lab or to do field work. Trader Joe's is a casual place. I don't think they'd nix anyone for a piercing...they know that the clientel aren't Ditto Heads, for the most part. As a matter of fact, in some instances I'd say the piercing might help the person get the job.
I love it when I go into Sally Beauty Supply and see the various, creative way the women dress, do their hair, etc.
